For the past 12 years, well 11 years 11 months, I have been meaning to install smoke alarms into our home.
Somehow, I never got around to it for one reason or another – no money, no time, too busy to get them, or just general procrastination, apathy, or just plain couldn’t be bothered.
This week we had a timely reminder. Some very good friends of one of my wife’s work colleagues had a house fire about a week ago now, and they lost just about everything – including their art collection worth many millions of dollars. Their collection contained many works by influential New Zeland artists, including Colin McCahon and Ralph Hotere. (See the newspaper article here). Luckily, they were woken up by their smoke alarms, and escaped unhurt with their Great Dane.
A timely reminder.
So guess what I did this weekend! When I was down getting new bathroom cabinetry and taps, a new front door, some paint, and a few other bits and pieces, I purchased some smoke alarms. And only about $10 each
And, I have also installed them!
We are constantly told by the fire service that
Smoke Alarms Save Lives
And they do.
We have insurance for everything else, but that’s no good if you don’t survive.
If you don’t have one installed in your home, don’t wait 12 years, do it as soon as possible.
Live! (So you can laugh and love)
